The Fisherman Thought It Was Driftwood

The fisherman almost kept going.

The object floating near the reeds looked like a broken tree branch.

Nothing unusual.

Then it moved.

Just slightly.

He stopped his boat and looked again.

Still.

Then another movement.

The fisherman grabbed his binoculars.

And immediately turned the engine around.

Because it wasn’t driftwood.

And it wasn’t going to survive much longer.

The object was a young deer.

Somehow it had entered the river upstream and been carried into deeper water by the current.

Exhausted, the animal could barely keep its head above the surface.

By the time the fisherman reached it, the deer was struggling to stay afloat.

Carefully, he maneuvered the boat alongside.

The frightened animal tried to swim away but had no strength left.

Using a life jacket and a rope, the fisherman managed to keep the deer near the boat until they reached shallow water.

For several moments the animal simply stood there trembling.

Then it slowly climbed the riverbank.

The fisherman expected it to disappear immediately.

Instead, the deer turned once.

Looked back.

And then vanished into the trees.

The fisherman later said he had caught thousands of fish in his life.

But that was the catch he would never forget.
