At first, the mail carrier thought nothing of it.
A dog sitting near a cornfield.
Then he saw the dog again the next day.
And the day after that.
And the day after that.
Always in the same spot.
Always facing the field.
Never moving very far.
The dog wasn’t barking.
Wasn’t chasing animals.
Wasn’t playing.
Just watching.
For nearly a week.
Finally, the mail carrier pulled over and walked toward him.
The closer he got, the more worried he became.
Because the dog wasn’t guarding the field.
He was guarding something inside it.

Several rows into the cornfield, hidden beneath broken stalks, was a frightened litter of puppies.
Five of them.
Tiny.
Hungry.
And too young to survive on their own.
The dog sitting beside the field wasn’t their father.
He was another abandoned stray from the same area.
Neighbors later reported seeing him bringing food scraps into the field at night.
For days he had stayed nearby.
Keeping watch.
Waiting.
Protecting them.
Animal rescuers safely recovered all five puppies.
The stray dog followed the rescue vehicle all the way to the shelter.
As if making sure they arrived safely.
The shelter staff eventually named him Guardian.
Because that’s exactly what he had been.
