The Old Man Bought a Birthday Cake Every Year

Everyone in the bakery knew him.

Every year.

Same date.

Same cake.

Same words.

“Please write Happy 12th Birthday.”

Nobody questioned it.

Until one year…

a young employee asked:

“How old is your son now?”

The old man stopped smiling.

Looked at the cake.

And quietly replied:

“He’ll always be twelve.”

The bakery suddenly became silent.

Forty years earlier…

his son drowned while swimming with friends.

He was twelve.

The father blamed himself.

Because that morning…

he promised to go with him.

But work came first.

Every birthday since…

he buys the same cake.

The same flavor.

The same message.

Then he takes it to the lake.

Lights twelve candles.

And sits there until sunset.

Not because he thinks his son is watching.

But because fathers never stop being fathers.

Even when nobody calls them Dad anymore.
