Every winter,
a lone wolf appeared outside an old man’s cabin.

Then it would disappear.
No one understood why.
The old man never chased it away.
In fact, he always left food nearby.
One winter night, the wolf failed to appear.
For the first time in over a decade, the forest remained empty.
Worried, the old man took a lantern and followed the wolf’s usual trail.
Deep in the woods, he found the animal trapped beneath a fallen tree.
The wolf was weak and unable to escape.
The old man spent hours cutting branches and freeing it.
As the wolf stood up, he finally understood.
Around its neck was a faded leather collar.
Years earlier, he had rescued an injured wolf pup and released it back into the wild.
The collar was the same one he had placed on the young animal before setting it free.
For eleven years, the wolf had returned every winter.
Not for food.
But to visit the man who had saved its life.
The next evening, the wolf returned to its usual spot outside the cabin.
And it kept coming back every winter after that.
