The nurses tried stopping the dog from entering the ICU.
But he refused to leave.
Barking.
Crying.
Scratching at the hospital doors.
Inside the room, 9-year-old Liam was connected to machines that doctors already knew wouldn’t save him.
His mother sat beside him holding his tiny hand and crying silently.

the dog broke free.

Liam smiled weakly while the golden retriever licked tears from his face.
The dog’s name was Max.
He had slept beside Liam every night since the boy was diagnosed with cancer two years earlier.
During chemo.
During surgeries.
During nights Liam cried from pain.
Max never left him.
Doctors had warned the family that Liam probably wouldn’t survive the night.
But nobody expected him to wake up one final time.
Liam looked into his mother’s eyes softly.
“Don’t let Max wait for me at the door tomorrow…”
His mother instantly broke down sobbing.
Then Liam buried his face gently into the dog’s fur.
