The shelter workers thought it was strange.
Every morning after breakfast, the old dog picked up his food bowl.
Carried it across the room.
And placed it beside an empty kennel.
Then he walked away.
The next day he did it again.
And again.
And again.
No matter where staff moved the bowl, it always ended up back at the same kennel.
Finally, one volunteer checked old records.
The moment she did, her eyes filled with tears.
Because the kennel wasn’t always empty.

Months earlier, the dog had arrived at the shelter with another senior dog.
The pair had lived together for nearly ten years after being rescued from the same property.
They ate together.
Slept together.
Played together.
Staff quickly realized they were inseparable.
Then one of the dogs developed severe health problems.
Despite treatment, he passed away.
The surviving dog never seemed the same afterward.
Workers noticed he often slept near the empty kennel.
Then he began carrying his food bowl there.
At first they thought it was random behavior.
But eventually they understood.
For years, the two dogs had shared everything.
Even meals.
The old dog still carried his bowl over each morning.
Still expecting his friend to join him.
Months later, a family adopted him.
They also adopted another senior rescue dog.
Not as a replacement.
Just so he wouldn’t have to eat alone anymore.
