I Never Should Have Entered Those Woods

I was hiking alone when I heard screaming deep in the forest.

At first, I thought it was an animal.

Then I heard the words clearly.

“RUN.”

Branches snapped somewhere behind me.

Fast.

Heavy.

Getting closer.

I started walking faster down the trail, trying not to panic.

That’s when I saw him.

A man covered in mud burst through the trees and grabbed my jacket so hard he nearly pulled me to the ground.

His face was bleeding.
His hands were shaking violently.

“Don’t stop moving,” he whispered.

I asked him what was happening.

He kept looking behind us.

Terrified.

Then he said something that made my stomach drop.

“It learns your voice.”

Suddenly, somewhere deep in the forest…

I heard my own voice call my name.

From the darkness behind us.

Exactly like me.

“Help…
please…”

The man’s face went completely pale.

And then he started running.

(Part 2 in comments…)

We ran through the forest so fast I could barely breathe.

Branches ripped at our clothes while the voice followed us through the trees.

Sometimes close.
Sometimes far away.

But always sounding exactly like me.

Then it changed.

It started copying the man beside me instead.

Perfectly.

Even his breathing.

Even his screams.

I finally grabbed him and shouted:

“WHAT IS THAT THING?”

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

Then whispered:

“It only hunts people who answer it.”

Suddenly, the forest went completely silent.

No wind.
No insects.
Nothing.

Then, directly behind us…

my own voice whispered:

“I found you.”
