My grandfather had been fishing on that lake for almost 40 years.
He said he knew every current.
Every deep spot.
Every strange sound at night.

But last Saturday…
he caught something that made him leave all his equipment behind and drive straight to the police station.
He wouldn’t tell anyone what it was.
Not even my grandmother.
The only thing he said was:
“It should not have been down there.”
At first, everyone thought he was losing his mind.
Until the divers arrived the next morning.
The entire lake was shut down before noon.
And when officers carried a black container out of the water…
my grandfather started crying.
(Part 2 in comments)
The police questioned my grandfather for almost three hours.
He barely spoke the entire time.
He just kept staring at the lake through the station window.
Later that night, one of the officers finally told us what he had pulled up.
It wasn’t a body.
It was a locked metal box chained to concrete blocks.
The divers originally thought it was old fishing equipment.
Until they forced it open.
Inside were dozens of photographs.
All of missing people.
Different years.
Different ages.
But every single picture had one thing in common.
Written across the back in black marker were the words:
“HE SAW TOO MUCH.”
Then the youngest diver suddenly recognized one of the faces.
It belonged to his own brother…
who disappeared eleven years earlier.
