The bakery was locked every night.
The alarm was active.
Nothing was ever stolen.
Yet every morning…
the baker found tiny muddy footprints.
Not on the floor.
On the counter.
Right beside the cash register.
The prints appeared every single day.
Always ending in the same place.
But never beginning anywhere.
The police checked the doors.
The locks.
The windows.
Nothing.
On the tenth morning…
the baker arrived an hour before sunrise.
And waited.

Just before dawn, a young raccoon squeezed through a narrow roof vent above the storage room.
It wasn’t searching for money.
Or bread.
Each morning it climbed onto the counter to drink a few drops of water that collected beneath an old leaking pipe.
The tiny footprints ended there because the animal always climbed back the same hidden way.
The vent was safely covered, and the bakery placed a shallow bowl of water outside instead.
The muddy footprints disappeared.
But every morning, the raccoon could still be seen waiting outside the back door.
