The Bridge Inspector Thought It Was a Shadow

The bridge inspector nearly walked past it.

At first glance, it looked like a dark shadow beneath the steel structure.

Nothing unusual.

Then the shadow moved.

Just slightly.

He stopped.

Looked again.

And immediately grabbed his radio.

Because whatever was down there wasn’t supposed to be alive.

And it definitely wasn’t supposed to be hanging over the river.

A young raccoon had become trapped in loose safety netting beneath the bridge.

Nobody knew how long it had been there.

The animal was suspended several feet above the water.

Too frightened to move.

Too exhausted to escape.

The inspector immediately called animal rescue.

But reaching the raccoon wasn’t easy.

Rescuers had to lower themselves from the bridge using safety harnesses.

For nearly an hour, they worked carefully to avoid frightening the animal further.

Finally, the last strand of netting was cut away.

The raccoon climbed into the rescue carrier on its own.

Several rescuers later admitted they expected a difficult struggle.

Instead, the exhausted animal seemed relieved the moment help arrived.
