The Elderly Man Kept Buying Bread for a Dog That Never Came Back.

Every morning before sunrise, the old man walked slowly to the same small bakery near the train station.

And every single morning…

he bought two pieces of bread.

One for himself.

And one for a stray dog that used to wait outside the shop every day.

But for the past week…

the dog never appeared.

Still, the old man kept buying the second piece anyway.

Rain.
Cold.
Snow.

Didn’t matter.

One morning, the bakery owner finally asked softly:

“Why do you still buy bread for him if he’s gone?”

The old man looked toward the empty sidewalk for several seconds.

Then quietly whispered:

“Because maybe he’s still trying to come back.”

The bakery owner felt tears forming instantly.

But what happened later that evening…

completely broke him.

That evening, the bakery owner closed the shop during heavy rain and noticed the old man still sitting alone beneath the station lights.

Holding the untouched piece of bread.

Waiting.

Concerned, the owner walked over and gently sat beside him.

That’s when the old man finally explained.

Three years earlier, after his wife died, the stray dog started following him home every morning from the bakery.

The animal slept outside his apartment every night.

Walked beside him every day.

And somehow became the only living thing waiting for him after the loneliness consumed his life.

Then one week earlier, the dog suddenly disappeared.

The old man searched everywhere.

Animal shelters.
Parks.
Nearby streets.

Nothing.

As rain poured around them, the bakery owner quietly asked:

“What was his name?”

The old man smiled weakly through tears.

“I never gave him one…”

His voice cracked.

“…because I was scared I’d love him too much.”

The bakery owner instantly started crying.

Then suddenly—

from across the rainy street—

a weak bark echoed through the darkness.

The old man slowly lifted his head.

And there he was.

Thin.
Injured.
Limping badly toward him.

Still trying to come back.
