The farmer almost set the haystack on fire.
It was old.
Wet.
And had to go.
He poured fuel around it.
Reached for a lighter.
Then froze.
Something moved.
At first he thought it was a rat.
Then he saw them.
Two tiny eyes.
Looking back at him.
The farmer dropped the lighter immediately.
And started pulling the hay apart with his bare hands.

Deep inside the haystack was a newborn kitten.
Barely alive.
Its eyes still blue.
Its tiny body cold from the night.
The farmer carefully wrapped it in his jacket.
But then he heard another cry.
And another.
Hidden deeper inside were three more kittens.
Their mother had likely given birth there days earlier.
The farmer spent nearly an hour dismantling the haystack by hand.
One kitten at a time.
All four survived.
The following morning, he discovered something beautiful.
The mother cat had returned.
Curled around her babies.
Safe.
Warm.
Exactly where he left them.
The old haystack remained standing for another month.
Nobody complained.
