The sea was completely calm.
Then an old fisherman spotted what looked like a piece of driftwood floating between chunks of ice.
As his boat came closer…

The shadows belonged to three adult seals circling beneath the ice.
They stayed several meters away, watching every movement.
Marine biologists later explained that the adults had remained nearby because the pup was too weak to swim.
Once the fisherman safely lifted the pup aboard for treatment, the adults slowly disappeared into deeper water.
Weeks later, after the seal recovered, the rescue team released it at the same coastline.
Within minutes, three familiar seals appeared offshore.
The young seal swam toward them.
Together they disappeared beneath the waves.
