Traffic rushed by at 70 miles per hour.
Nobody noticed.
Nobody except the highway maintenance worker.
At first, he thought it was a torn plastic bag caught in the fence.
Then it moved.
Just once.
The worker immediately stopped his truck.
Climbed over the barrier.
And started running.
Because whatever was hanging there wasn’t trash.
And it was running out of time.

A young owl had become tangled in loose netting that someone had illegally dumped beside the highway.
The bird had struggled for hours.
Every movement tightened the net further around its wings.
Drivers passed all morning without noticing.
The maintenance worker was the first person to realize the owl was alive.
Animal rescuers were called, but the bird couldn’t wait.
Carefully, he climbed the embankment and cut away the netting piece by piece.
The owl remained completely still.
Almost as if it knew help had finally arrived.
When the last strand fell away, the bird opened its wings.
Paused for a moment.
Then disappeared into the sky.
The worker later said he had repaired thousands of miles of highway.
But that rescue was the most important thing he did all year.
