The Little Girl Reserved a Seat on the School Bus Every Day

The bus driver noticed it immediately.

Every morning, the little girl sat in the second row.

Beside the window.

And every morning she placed her backpack on the seat next to her.

Nobody was allowed to sit there.

Not friends.

Not classmates.

Nobody.

If the bus became crowded, she still refused.

One afternoon the driver finally asked:

“Who are you saving the seat for?”

The girl answered without hesitation.

“My brother.”

The driver smiled.

Then checked the student list.

The girl didn’t have a brother.

Years earlier, before she started school, the girl’s mother was pregnant with twins.

But complications during birth claimed one baby.

The surviving child grew up hearing stories about the brother she never met.

She knew his name.

His birthday.

His place in the family.

Every morning on the school bus she saved him a seat.

Not because she believed he would climb aboard.

Because she didn’t want him forgotten.

When the driver learned the story, he quietly placed a small stuffed bear in the empty seat on her birthday.

The little girl hugged him and cried.

So did the driver.
