Nobody knew where they came from.
Every morning…
a single seashell appeared on the wooden pier behind the hospital.
The next morning…
another.
Different shape.
Different color.
Always one.
Never two.
The cleaning staff threw them away.
The following day…
another shell appeared.
After three weeks…
a nurse arrived before sunrise.
She wanted to catch whoever was leaving them.
She expected a child.
Or maybe a fisherman.
Instead…
something quietly climbed onto the pier from the water.
It was carrying another shell.
👇 Full story in the comments.
It was a young sea otter.
The nurse stayed perfectly still.
The otter placed the shell on the end of the pier.
Then looked toward one particular hospital window before slipping back into the water.
Later that day, an elderly volunteer explained the mystery.
Months earlier, a marine wildlife rehabilitation team had treated the injured otter before releasing it nearby.
Several volunteers from the hospital had helped care for it during recovery.
Nobody could know whether the otter remembered them.
But every few days, it returned.
Always leaving one shell.
Always looking toward the same building.
The staff eventually placed a small wooden bowl on the pier.
The shells are still collected there today.
