The shelter was empty.
The lights were off.
Everyone had gone home.
Almost.
One worker stayed behind to finish paperwork.
That’s when she heard it.
Scratch.
Scratch.
Scratch.
Very faint.
Coming from somewhere in the building.
At first she thought it was a mouse.
Then the sound stopped.
A few minutes later, it started again.
This time louder.
The worker grabbed a flashlight and followed the noise.
What she discovered behind a storage cabinet made her call for help immediately.

Behind the cabinet was a narrow gap in the wall.
Inside, a tiny kitten had become trapped.
Nobody knew how long it had been there.
The shelter had recently taken in dozens of rescued animals from a nearby property.
The kitten had likely slipped away unnoticed.
Too frightened to cry.
Too frightened to move.
Only scratching when everything became quiet.
Workers carefully removed part of the wall to create an opening.
When the kitten finally emerged, it was covered in dust and trembling.
The first thing it did was walk directly toward a nursing mother cat resting nearby.
To everyone’s surprise, the cat immediately began grooming the kitten.
As if she had been waiting.
