The Soldier’s Birthday Cake

Every year…

A small bakery made the exact same birthday cake.

No one ever came to collect it.

A young soldier finally asked why.

The old baker smiled sadly.

“I made him a promise.”

For thirty years, Mr. Collins baked one chocolate cake every July 18.

Customers thought it was a mistake.

It wasn’t.

Years earlier, his best friend had left for war.

Before boarding the train, his mother asked Mr. Collins one favor.

“If my son never comes home…

Please don’t let the world forget his birthday.”

The soldier never returned.

But every year, candles were lit.

Not because someone was alive.

But because someone was still remembered.

One year, a young soldier walked into the bakery on July 18.

He shared the same birthday.

Together, they blew out the candles.

The promise lived on.
