Eight-year-old Emma skipped toward the railroad crossing, her favorite music playing loudly through her earbuds.
She smiled and hummed along, completely lost in her own world.
The crossing lights had just started flashing.
Far down the tracks, a train blasted its horn.
People nearby turned to look.
But Emma didn’t hear a thing.
Without slowing down, she stepped onto the tracks.
A woman on the sidewalk screamed.
The train was getting closer.
Emma took another step forward.
Then, out of nowhere, a stranger sprinted toward her.
Just as Emma reached the middle of the tracks—
a hand grabbed her backpack and yanked her backward.
PART 2 IN COMMENT
The train thundered past less than two seconds later.
The rush of wind knocked Emma to the ground.
Her earbuds had fallen out.
Only then did she hear the deafening roar.
Tears filled her eyes as she realized how close she had come.
The stranger knelt beside her, shaking from fear.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
Emma nodded, still speechless.
Her parents arrived moments later after hearing the commotion.
When witnesses explained what had happened, her mother burst into tears and hugged both Emma and the man.
The stranger quietly tried to leave.
But the crowd stopped him with applause.
That day, Emma learned that a few seconds can change everything.
And one brave stranger went home knowing he had saved a life.
