I was camping near the edge of a forest when I heard something crashing through the trees.
A deer burst into the clearing.
It looked exhausted.
Terrified.
Seconds later, a pack of wolves emerged from the darkness.
At least seven of them.
I expected them to attack.
But they didn’t.
The deer stopped.
The wolves stopped.
For nearly a minute, none of them moved.
Then something strange happened.
Every wolf slowly turned away from the deer.
And stared into the woods behind it.
The deer did the same.
Whatever was in those trees had scared both the prey and the predators.
Then the largest wolf let out a low growl.
And all of them started backing away.
The deer included.
That’s when I heard heavy footsteps coming from the darkness.
Part 2 in the comments.
The footsteps kept getting closer.
Branches snapped.
Something large was moving between the trees.
Then it stopped.
Complete silence.
The wolves turned and ran.
The deer bolted in the opposite direction.
Within seconds, the clearing was empty.
I didn’t wait to see what had frightened them.
I packed my gear and left.
The next morning, I returned with a local ranger.
When I described what happened, he looked uneasy.
Then he asked:
“Did you see what was making the footsteps?”
“No.”
The ranger nodded.
“Good.”
“Why?”
Because there are only two things that can make a wolf pack abandon a hunt.
And neither of them should be in these woods.
