Looked straight into the lens.
Picked up a handful of dirt.
And carefully threw it over the camera.
Not once.
Not twice.

The second camera showed something the first one couldn’t.
Just before sunrise, a small family of wild hedgehogs crossed the service road behind the enclosure.
The elephant had been standing near the fence every morning, watching them.
When the security camera rotated toward the road, it made a faint mechanical clicking sound.
Each time, the hedgehogs froze.
The elephant began covering the lens with dirt, apparently reacting to the sound.
When keepers temporarily turned off the rotating camera, the elephant never covered it again.
Whether it understood the connection or not, nobody can say.
But the timing was impossible to ignore.
The zoo quietly replaced the camera with a silent model.
The elephant never threw dirt again.
